Domaine dela Vieille Julienne
Domaine de la Vieille Julienne is one of the most esteemed estates in the southern Rhône Valley, with a winemaking history that dates back to the 17th century. The estate has been under the Daumen family’s ownership since 1905, and it is currently managed by Jean-Paul Daumen, who took over in the early 1990s. Daumen has elevated the estate to new heights, focusing on biodynamic farming and low-intervention winemaking, which has earned the domaine a reputation as one of the leading producers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. His dedication to expressing the terroir with purity and intensity has led to international acclaim, with the estate’s wines often cited as benchmarks for the appellation. Domaine de la Vieille Julienne’s wines are known for their power, complexity, and remarkable aging potential, reflecting the rich history and unique terroir of the region.
The estate’s vineyards are located in some of the most prized terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with soils composed of ancient alluvial deposits and large quartzite pebbles, known locally as galets roulés. These soils, combined with the region’s Mediterranean climate, provide the ideal conditions for growing Grenache, the dominant grape variety at Vieille Julienne, as well as Syrah, Mourvèdre, and other Rhône varieties. Daumen’s winemaking is characterized by a minimalist approach, with natural fermentation and aging in large, neutral oak foudres to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir. His commitment to biodynamic principles ensures that each wine is a true reflection of the vineyard’s ecosystem, with a depth and complexity that make them stand out in the crowded field of Châteauneuf-du-Pape producers.
