Elio Sandri operates Azienda Agricola Cascina Disa, a boutique winery located in Monforte d’Alba, within the heart of the Barolo region of Italy. The estate has been family-owned for generations, and Sandri himself has taken a traditional approach, focusing on low-yield, high-quality production. The winery is situated in the Perno area, a sub-region known for its rich, complex soils, contributing to the distinctiveness of Sandri's Barolos.
Sandri is a traditionalist at heart, using long maceration periods and extended aging in large Slavonian oak casks, known as "botti," which is a hallmark of classic Barolo production. This method allows for the slow and careful development of the wine's structure, tannins, and aromatic complexity. His Barolos are renowned for their elegance, balance, and extraordinary aging potential, often requiring several years in the bottle to reveal their full depth.
The vineyards are located in a prime area of Monforte d'Alba, characterized by steep slopes and a mix of clay and limestone soils. This unique terroir, coupled with Sandri’s meticulous vineyard management, results in wines that are both powerful and nuanced, offering a true expression of the Perno sub-region. The microclimate, influenced by the surrounding Alps, provides a long growing season that enhances the grapes' concentration and aromatic complexity.
